Polishing is need especially when defects are below the surface of the paint such as scratches, oxidation, acid etching and so on. By polishing the product used to polish the surface usually contain a certain level a abrassiveness will remove a thin layer of paint/clear coat. After removing the thin layer of paint/clear coat, the difference would be satisfying. But be careful not to remove too much of the clear coat as you might hit the undercoat and damage it and the only way of restoring it would be to respray.
